Our Proposition

Online learning in Jiu Jitsu and MMA, although rarely applied by most instructors, is driving rapid improvement in skills and performance for the fortunate few. The old model of a coach rocking up to class 10 minutes before, with no syllabus in place, working out what ‘moves’ they will show from their own repertoire, and then trying to quickly communicate to ‘completely cold’ students, who then struggle to understand what they are saying is a recipe for disaster. The poor students then get a few goes at trying the new moves, make lots of mistakes that rely on a busy coach to spot, get asked if they struggled in front of a room of people, say nothing, and then some intense sparring where the new moves introduced get completely forgotten. These types of gyms are already dying out, even though they haven’t realised why. The idea that your learning experience is simply the gym timetable is outdated, backward and frankly ridiculous. The opportunity to improve your Jiu Jitsu and MMA training is 24 / 7, 365 days per year, but only IF your coaches and peers share your ambitions.
Jiu Jitsu is often described as human chess, yet is rare that Jiu Jitsu players commit their games to writing or video as Chess players do, methodically reviewing moves and looking to correct mistakes, however small in a relentless quest for learning and improvement. When a coach or member turns up at SBG Bury, in the vast majority of sessions, they are now briefed on exactly what we are working that week. They can watch videos in advance of the session either on the SBG Bury YouTube channel or here, with additional notes.  This means our members spend less time trying to figure out what the coach is attempting to knowledge transfer, and more time doing, ingraining and retaining the new software. Furthermore, they can watch back their session (there are camera holders throughout our ground floor and camera stands on our top floor). With coaches and students alike recording their sessions, mistakes can be quickly identified and rectified. Many Jiu Jitsu students, even black belts, are making the same mistakes year after year. However, once shown on video, they can often, and with the assistance of a coach, rectify their mistakes immediately. Years of improvements can be made in months.
Some of our members have joined from other local martial arts gyms, frustrated that the world class online material they are investing in on websites like BJJ Fanatics from household name instructors are not being practised. They are only as good as the often ill prepared coach. Rest assured, SBG Bury invests in all the leading name BJJ instructors so you don’t have to, whether it is improving your breathwork for endurance and mobility, strength training, or technical Jiu Jitsu or MMA skills, we have you covered.
Our students regularly ask questions on the previous sessions in our members group, they raise specific problems they experience with sparring partners, they send messages to coaches asking for feedback with an attached clip of the issue. From focusing on world class instruction to personalising your unique learning experience, this is a completely new way to approach Jiu Jitsu training. Not everyone has to involve themselves to this extent, but everyone benefits from an environment based on brains before brawn. Welcome to SBG Bury Online!
